According to a report by the Washington Post on the 16th, a Columbus, Ohio police officer shot and killed a 13-year-old suspect carrying a BB gun while responding to an armed robbery on Wednesday night.
Police said that as they chased a suspect into an alley, he pulled what appeared to be a gun from his waist and an officer opened fire, hitting him "multiple times." The teen was pronounced dead a short time later.
On Thursday morning, local police confirmed that the person who was killed was 13-year-old Tire King. The local police statement stated that further investigation of the area where the shooting occurred found that what the police said looked like a handgun "was determined to be a BB gun equipped with a laser transmitter."
Telkin was the second youngest person to be killed by police in the United States this year, according to a Washington Post database that tracks such deaths. The youngest victim was 12-year-old Ciara Meyer in Pennsylvania.
Columbus police said they are still looking for video of the shooting. However, it appears that none of the officers responding to the incident were wearing body cameras.
Later on Thursday, the police released a picture of a BB gun through its social media and said it was a replica of the BB gun that Telkin was carrying at the time.
